Incorporating music into your life offers a myriad of benefits, such as stress relief, improved focus, emotional expression, and opportunities for personal growth and social connection. However, As a working professional, finding time to engage in hobbies and creative outlets can be challenging. Between balancing a career, personal relationships, and countless other responsibilities, even adding one practice session to your schedule might feel overwhelming.

At Musicians Playground, we understand this challenge, and we believe that the lesson is the practice. Our group classes, private lessons, happy hour performances, and additional events are designed to take the pressure to practice off you, making practice an enjoyable part of your life rather than just another task to cram into your busy schedule.

For those of you eager to practice outside the studio and fast-track your progress, this blog post offers strategies to make practice time fun and manageable alongside a busy schedule; we’ll guide you through finding organic practice time tailored to fit you, setting goals and expectations, communicating with your instructor for support, and creating a positive personalized practice environment – because it doesn’t have to be a struggle!

1. Finding Organic Practice Time

Begin by examining your current schedule: Identify any free time slots that you can allocate for practice. Consider moments when you’re waiting, commuting, or during breaks at work. Even if you only have 15 minutes, it’s a valuable opportunity to practice. Remember: we want this to be fun and manageable, so once you’ve identified potential time slots, take note of when you feel most energized and focused. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Select practice times when you’re most likely to be productive and engaged.

It’s essential to be realistic about your available time and not overcommit. Start with a few practice sessions per week and adjust as needed. Remember that consistency is more critical than the quantity of practice time.

2. Set Goals and Expectations that Keep You Focused

Set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for your practice sessions. Breaking your learning down into smaller, achievable tasks is often more effective than trying to tackle everything at once. Make sure you celebrate your progress, no matter how small – it’s a marathon, not a sprint! If you face any challenges, remind yourself that every musician encounters obstacles, no matter their skill level, and overcoming them will make you a better player!

Reward yourself for reaching milestones or completing challenging tasks. This can be as simple as enjoying a treat or scheduling a fun activity for yourself. Recognizing your achievements will keep you motivated and excited about practicing!

3. Collaborate with Your Instructor

Your MP instructor’s got your back, so feel free to use us! Maintain open communication with your instructor to discuss your goals, progress, and any difficulties you encounter. They can provide valuable feedback and guidance to help you improve and stay on track. As you grow and develop as a musician, your practice routines will evolve accordingly. Regularly consult with your instructor to ensure your practice aligns with your current skill level and goals.

It’s normal to experience setbacks and plateaus in your musical journey, but when this happens, don’t hesitate to reach out to your instructor. They can help you identify the root of the issue and provide strategies to overcome these challenges, keeping your progress on track. We are here to support you!

4. Create a Peaceful, Personalized Practice Environment

Create a practice space that is comfortable, inviting, and free from distractions. This could be a dedicated room or a corner of your living area. Is it more comfortable to have an instrument at home? Or do you prefer to practice away from home? Personalize your space with decorations, lighting, and anything else that inspires you.

Minimize distractions during practice time by turning off electronic devices or setting them to “Do Not Disturb” mode. Let  family members or roommates know of your practice schedule so they can support you by respecting your practice time.

Develop a consistent practice routine, including warm-ups and cool-downs, to help you get into the right mindset. Consistency will also make it easier to maintain your practice schedule and track your progress.

5. Take advantage of Musicians Playground!

We believe that the lesson is the practice, so we’ve created facilities to enhance your practice experience:

  1. Group Classes: Participate in band classes and labs to learn from others, receive feedback, stay motivated, and build community.
  2. Private Lessons: Schedule private lessons on your instrument for personalized instruction tailored to your needs and goals.

Bonus Tip:  Track your progress!

Tracking your progress is a great way to keep you focused, and seeing how far you’ve come will help build your confidence and keep you motivated to continue! There are many ways to go about this:

  • Use a tracking app to measure how many days, on average, you’re meeting your practice goals.
  • Utilize a digital journal similar to the one your instructor uses to track your lesson materials and detail what you’re accomplishing in your practice sessions, any questions you’re having and growth you’re experiencing.
  • Participate in performance opportunities (such as MP Happy Hours) and review your performance videos to see the positive changes that are occurring from incorporating music into your life.
